Much of traditional Christian theology holds that the events of this world are of little importance because our real life will be found in the eternal, in Heaven, after death. In the Eastern tradition we have the notion that the world is Maya, illusion, and that reality is found on a far different plane. Pharaohs of Egypt believed that they would pass into a different and grander world after death.

So I don’t see much new in this game of “what if we are all in some giant computer simulation.” Just another way to reassure ourselves that Death is not Real, and there is More Than This. Just another way to blunt our consciences to the injustices and tragedies of the real world, because, you know, it’s not really the real world at all — just a simulation, just a rehearsal, just a qualifier match and not the real game.

We’ve always dreamed of escaping from the bleakness of existentialism, the distressing finitude of our short little lives. So… here’s the new religion for the new elite who, clever as they may be, still cannot come to terms with their humanity and mortality. Socrates knew better :-)
