Nah. Not convinced… Not convinced by Prof Peterson’s internationally publicised whining about how suppressed his speech is. Not convinced by apologias for angry white men experiencing entitlement panic, not convinced by token PoC or women who can be cherry-picked to undermine the case for broad, long-running social justice movements. Not convinced that social pressure to treat others with simple courtesy and respect is a bad thing. Not convinced that we are anywhere near the Red Guard moment.
If science is threatened at this moment in history, imho it’s threatened far more by the revanchist fossil-funded right with its various campaigns to silence and/or defund climate researchers… unlike the theoretical musings of a handful of (imho) woowoo feminists who decry the scientific project itself as a patriarchal construct [while, I note, driving cars, using computers, and enjoying all the other benefits of the scientific endeavour], the assault on climate science (including censorship of official language) actually has done some real damage and will do more, both to the academy and to the body politic. Far, far more real and urgent damage than could ever be done by asking people to respect someone else’s preference as to what pronoun they’d like to be called by.
